Festival of Forestry 2012 Tour

Teachers Learn Lessons in Coastal Forestry:
Twenty BC teachers enjoyed the forest as their classroom as they embarked on this year’s ‘Festival of Forestry’ tour based in Campbell River. Over three days, these teachers received a world-class opportunity to learn about everything from managed forests to marmots.
The BC Festival of Forestry is a non-profit organization committed to providing quality professional development experiences for school teachers. These annual, complimentary tours take interested teachers to different resource-based communities in BC. The tours provide an interactive learning experience to enhance teachers’ understanding of the complexities of sustainable forest management issues and to share great ways to bring this information into their classes.
This year, local tour guides from BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Vancouver Island University, Western Forest Products, Interfor, TimberWest and Island Timberlands introduced teachers to various forest ecosystems and active forest management areas from Courtenay to Sayward.
Braving mosquitoes and summer temperatures, the teachers spent three days learning about forest values and how forest professionals strive to strike a balance between the environment, economics and social expectations. One teacher described the experience as “probably the most productive three Pro-D days of my teaching career!”
There were exceptional opportunities to hear the perspectives of First Nations, learn about forest fire planning and management and tree seedling production from local experts in their respective fields, and engage in discussion on the often controversial topic of “forestry”.
Another teacher comments, “this was a fabulous opportunity to connect with inspired colleagues and passionate people from the forest industry.” No matter their job title or employer, it was clear that forest professionals care deeply about their work and want to be involved in providing educational opportunities for the public.
The teachers, some of them career advisors, also gained a sense for the diverse job opportunities involved in forestry – from forest professionals to information managers, biologists to machine operators.
Hands-on, impactful opportunities for people of all ages to learn about our forests is clearly of interest for both foresters and non-foresters alike. This group would enthusiastically agree that the forest makes a wonderful classroom.
