Sustainable Forest Management
Most of Island Timberlands forestland is classified as Managed Forest. As such, we comply with the Private Managed Forest Land Act, its accompanying regulations, and over thirty other provincial and federal statutes.
In order to ensure we maintain a sustainable business, we set internal operating levels that reflect the long-term sustainable harvest as determined by our harvest modelling. We track production on a daily basis and incorporate data on species, volume and location into periodic updates of the model. We also carry out surveys and inventories over time to ensure our forests are developing as predicted in the model.
A key component of sustainability is the protection of the forest from damaging agents. We maintain a vigilance over our land base to identify potential damaging agents such as fire, insects, invasive species and wind and we are prepared to react quickly when faced with potential damage.
